Why Human Connection Still Matters in a Remote and Hybrid Workplace

Remote and hybrid work have changed the way we work, and for many companies, they've been an incredible success. Teams are more flexible, businesses can hire the best people regardless of location, and employees often enjoy a healthier work-life balance.

At the same time, other things become more difficult. I would argue that some of these things are particularly important as AI becomes a bigger part of the way we work and communicate.

When people aren't sharing the same space every day, it's harder to build genuine relationships with the people they work alongside. It's also harder to feel personally connected to a company's mission and purpose.

These two things are closely connected, but they're not the same. One is about community. The other is about belonging.

Company Culture Doesn't Build Itself

Strong company culture has never been about free lunches or annual retreats.

It's about people feeling seen, valued, and connected. Connected to the people they work with and to the purpose of the organization.

In an office, those feelings often develop naturally through everyday conversations and shared experiences. In a remote or hybrid workplace, they have to be created more intentionally.

Sometimes that means finding small ways to remind people that they're part of a team, not just a collection of individuals working from different locations.

The Human Side of Business

One thing I've noticed over the years is that I often have a sense of a company's culture within minutes of walking through the door.

As a photographer, I usually arrive to an office full of people I've never met before. Yet it's often surprisingly easy to tell whether employees genuinely enjoy being there, whether they take pride in representing the company, and whether they feel connected to one another.

There's a noticeable atmosphere. You can feel whether people are simply working for the company or genuinely proud to be part of it.

In today's workplace, fostering a positive and productive atmosphere takes more intention than it used to.

Whether it's bringing people together in person, recognizing their contributions, or investing in how they're represented to clients and to one another, the companies that make people feel like they belong are often the companies people are proud to represent.

Professional portraits may seem like a small part of that picture, but they can reinforce something much bigger.

They say, "You're a valued individual and you're part of this team. You matter here. You're helping tell the story of this company."

Nothing says "you're not really important to our team" like being told your headshot from 10 years is fine to use on the company website.
